Investigation: Building Academic Language to Deepen Comprehension (Grades 6-12)

In this investigation you will investigate the critical role that background knowledge and vocabulary play in learning.  You will examine the theoretical basis and the practical application of developing background knowledge and vocabulary.  As you engage in the content in this unit, think about questions such as:

  • How does learning academic language support learning content?
  • What is the role of the content teacher in teaching language?
  • How can we assess students’ background knowledge? What can we do to fill in any gaps?
  • How can teachers integrate meaningful vocabulary instruction across the content areas?

Investigations offer just-in-time, self-paced online professional learning with extensive models and examples of the teaching shifts needed to help students prepare to meet college-and career-ready standards for learning.

  • Each Investigation is designed to take approximately 3-5 hours to complete.
  • Structured learning engagements offer a blend of professional readings, classroom videos and on demand web seminars.
  • 24/7 access to content allows you to engage with the resources at a time that is most convenient for you, and we give you access to the online content for three full months!
