Description

Six years after the launch of the Common Core State Standards, what have we learned about what it means to support students in meeting the challenges demanded by these standards?  In this one-hour Web seminar, author Tonya Perry and two of her colleagues return to the questions initially posed in her book Supporting Students in a Time of Core Standards, Grades 6-8.  This session focuses on the interrelated practices of close reading and academic writing, and the importance of supporting students across the disciplines in identifying and applying these practices in meaningful and connected ways. Presenters will share examples from their own practices, including:

  • Centering the curriculum around debate, increasing rigor and engagement in authentic ways.
  • Using mentor texts to model writing in the disciplines.
  • Engaging students around topics of social justice and civic engagement that matter to them.
  • Supporting teachers in acquiring the skills and content knowledge to lead this learning.
