You have heard the call to action: our students are digital natives and we need to teach them 21st century skills. But, what does this look like in writing classrooms? In this Web seminar, we will explore how well-established practices in the writing workshop approach—student choice and inquiry, conferring on writing, examining author’s craft, publishing writing, and broadening our understandings of assessment—can be adapted with digital writing tools such as blogs, wikis, collaborative word processors, and digital stories. Through examples of student and teacher work, as well as explanations of particular digital writing tools, participants in this session will discover how to create a digital writing workshop in their own classroom.

Troy Hicks is an authority on the teaching of writing, writing across the curriculum, literacy and technology, and teacher education and professional development. In his research, he collaborates with K-12 teachers and explores how they implement newer literacies in their classrooms. He is co-director of the Red Cedar Writing Project, a site of the National Writing Project, and conducts a variety of professional development workshops related to writing and technology. Hicks writes the blog "Digital Writing, Digital Teaching," which explores a variety of issues related to teaching writing with new media for K-12 teachers and teacher educators, and it was named one of the best 100 education blogs in 2006 by the Online Education Database. His blog can be found at
