Description

As literacy in the disciplines has been at the forefront of Common Core implementation conversations, this webinar discusses key elements of disciplinary literacies instruction that include considerations for instructional design and assessment.   Approaches for bridging content area literacy instruction with disciplinary literacies instruction are discussed in terms of texts, habits of thinking and practice, and discourse unique to the disciplines.

Presenter:  Michael Manderino is an assistant professor of Literacy Education at Northern Illinois University. He is a former high school social studies teacher of 14 years.  Additionally, he acted as a district Literacy Coordinator and literacy coach for two years where he and his colleagues implemented a district-wide disciplinary literacy initiative.  Michael's research centers around the intersection of disciplinary literacy and digital literacies at the secondary level and investigates how students read and write with multiple multimedia texts in discipline-specific contexts.  He also researches the impact of high school disciplinary literacy coaching.
