Description

Students need a meaningful context, accessible texts and active assistance to outgrow themselves as readers.  Think alouds, visualization strategies and action strategies are all powerful ways to model, mentor and monitor student use of new stances and strategies in the context of meaningful reading experiences. This presentation will review the power of think alouds, visual strategies and action/drama strategies, and show how technological applications can be used to extend these strategies in ways engaging and useful to students.

Rachel Bear teaches AP Literature and Composition and recently completed her MA in Teaching English Language Arts.  She is a member of Idaho’s National Reading Initiative team and has collaborated to expand knowledge and professional development opportunities on the topic of academic literacy across subject areas. She is also a member of Idaho’s Literacy by Design Team, an initiative focused on designing curricular units that support teachers and students in meeting the new core common standards.  She has offered local professional development on supporting students before, during and after reading by using visualization, think alouds and action/drama strategies.  At the 2010 NCTE Annual Meeting she will present on 21st Century Literacy with a focus on using wikis to develop critical thinking skills and for collaborative, multimodal composing.  Rachel and Jeffrey Wilhelm have co-taught AP Lit and Comp and designed many new strategies for teaching reading and writing through this collaboration.
