In this web seminar, David Hornsby and Lorraine Wilson will describe how they teach phonics as children learn to read and write in classrooms that are characterized by discovery and purposeful language use.
A letter represents a sound only in the context of meaningful text
Phonics is different for different speakers of English
There is no set sequence for teaching sound-letter relationships
(but there are valuable guidelines)
Looking at samples of children’s writing so we can ask: ‘What do the children know about phonics? What might the teacher teach now?’
Using picture-story books as starting points for teaching phonics. What letter-sound relationships are featured in the text? What discoveries might the children make?
