In Reading as Rhetorical Invention, Brent asserts that reading is an important way of participating in the unending dialogue by which we create our meanings and beliefs. Drawing from classical and modern Western rhetorics, reader-response and discourse-processing theories, Brent argues that rhetorical theory should include a theory of reading to describe how meaning is made during the act of reading, how readers evaluate the claims made by writers, and how readers mediate the often conflicting propositions made by authors in order to develop a unified system of knowledge. In later chapters, he demonstrates how this integrated and expanded model of rhetoric can be applied to the criticism of textual interaction and to the teaching of research methods.
