This Web seminar is part of a series focused on skills and teaching practices that are essential to successful implementation of the Common Core State Standards. School leaders, coaches, and teachers will learn strategies for gearing up for the demands of the CCSS.
The media remains a dominant force in the lives of today’s students, yet the 21st century classroom still gives media a backseat to print. Media are texts, designed to be read (analyzed/ deconstructed) as well as written (produced/created). Frank W. Baker examines standards that include media and offers recommendations for engaging students with popular culture and the media. Participants in this session will:
- understand how media is positioned in the Common Core Standards, Mcrel, and state ELA standards.
- learn how “critical thinking” is a major component of media literacy.
- feel more comfortable incorporating pop culture and youth media into the ELA classroom.
